Kupwara, Sep 12: In the final of the Kupwara T20 Cricket Champions Trophy played between Victoria Cricket Club and City Cricket Club at Sports Stadium Galizoo Kupwara, City Sports Club claimed the trophy with five wickets in hand.
After winning the toss VCC decided to bat first and made 149 runs in 20 overs.
Chasing the target City Club scored 152 runs, losing five wickets in 18 overs. Irfan ul Haq remained top scorer with 65 runs and played a winning knock for City Club. He was declared Man of the Match.
Ishfaq Ahmad of City Club was declared Man of the Series for making 107 runs and picking up 9 wickets in the series. He was awarded a trophy and cash prize of rupees 5,000.
The winning team was awarded a trophy and a cash prize of rupees 30,000 and the runner-up received rupees 20,000 as cash prize.
Speaking on the occasion, DDC said that this tournament organized by District Administration Kupwara is just a beginning and such tournaments will be organized on regular basis to help talented sportspersons of the district showcase their talent and offer them opportunities to represent the district at State, national and international levels. Underlining the significance of sports, DDC said that sports are as important as education for all-round development of personality. Towards this end, the district administration and the Sports department is going to organise Kupwara T20 Champions Trophy 2018 which is expected to witness participation of 226 teams from 16 zones of the district. Besides, a Rural Sports Mela will also be organised to promote all kinds of sports and games.
DDC expressed warm gratitude and appreciation for District Youth Services and Sports Department for organising such events on sustained basis towards youth engagement and called for all stakeholders including banks to contribute towards promotion and encouragement of sports in the district under Corporate Social Responsibility.
Meanwhile, DDC inaugurated the Kupwara T20 Champions Trophy 2018 at Sports Stadium Galizoo. The tournament played with the underlying theme of
‘Sports for Peace and Development’ is an initiative under Khelo India Scheme.
District Development Commissioner Kupwara, Khalid Jahangir was the chief guest and distributed trophies and prizes among the players. SSP Kupwara, Shriram Ambarkar, CEO, M.S. War, Area Commander, Lt.Colonel Akash Chinche, Manager Lead Bank Kupwara, District Information Officer, Aijaz Hussain Malik and a huge gathering of sports enthusiasts were present on the occasion.
